Recruiting for Intercultural Training FETAC level 5

As part of the Forums ‘Diversity Training Programme’ funded by the Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee, a course entitled ‘Intercultural Training’ is being offered. This course will allow participants to appreciate their own and others cultures and explore how ideas of ‘culture’ are created and exchanged. The course will cover six different units:

Understanding prejudice and discrimination
What is racism/sectarianism
Exploration of Culture
Building an analysis of how different cultures inter-relate
The various levels where racism/sectarianism etc are played out
Intercultural Tension and Conflict
Responding to intercultural tension and conflict through community development

The course will be run in a venue in Sligo town and will begin on Tuesday 12^th January 2010. The course will be held on Tuesday’s evenings and run for 12 weeks. . Each session will be from 6.30 to 9.30. There will also be a 1-day study visit to Northern Ireland to learn more about the issue of sectarianism and the Troubles. Participants will be able to work towards a FETAC level 5 certificate.

This course would be of interest to anyone who is working with adults and children in the community. Applications are open to all, however we would particularly like to welcome applications from members of the Protestant community, Travellers, new communities and young people aged 18-25. There will be places for 15 participants to take part. There is already a lot of interest so be sure to get your name in early.

Participation in the course is free. Financial support to cover childcare or travel costs will also be considered where there is a genuine need.

Sligo County Community Forum are delighted to announce that they will be undertaking a ‘diversity training’ project which has been awarded by the Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership and the Special EU Programmes Body. The chairperson of the forum today said “we are very pleased to have this opportunity to deliver diversity training within the county … the Forum have a stated objective to promote equality and inclusion and this will be a great way to help us to fulfill that objective”. A range of events are being planned which can be seen on our diversity training page.

Summer training events – a success!

Over May, June and July Sligo Forum hosted a number of training events for the community sector around Sligo. On average 10 people attended each of the four events in leadership training, community profiling, presentation skills and ‘doing funding applications’. Overall the feedback gathered from the evaluation sheets was very positive, with the vast majority of people rating the training an 8 or more out of ten. Many commented that they gained good skills and knowledge from the training and that they would be applying their knowledge within their own community setting. The training was delivered by Claire Galligan.

Sligo Forum hosts leadership training!

On the 9th June 2009 Sligo Forum hosted an introductory session in Leadership Training for community group members. The training was a great success with ten participants from a wide array of groups and organisations taking part. The group learned about aspects of how groups work, the qualities and attributes of good leadership and understanding group roles. The evaluation sheets sheets revealed very positive feedback from the group:

“Claire was a great facilitator”, “I enjoyed the training and the group experience”, “the training process pointed out lots of areas in my work/life that will be helpful to me”, “What I found most useful was learning about how groups function and the postive aspects they have”, “I learned about becoming a more effective leader”.

Sligo Forum announces training events

Sligo County Community Forum still has a limited number of places remaining for its upcoming training sessions in community needs analysis and ‘filling out funding applications’:

Carrying out a community needs analysis: 25^th June, Sligo Northside Centre, 10am to 3pm.

This training will be held over one day. This session is aimed at those working in a voluntary and paid capacity in the community. This course will be of interest to those who would like to know how to go about researching and collecting information on their own community, and how to involve the local community in this process. It may be of use to groups who would like to build a profile of their local community or make funding applications.

Filling out funding applications: 9^th July, 6-9pm, Easkey Community Centre.

This session will be held on one evening. It will be of interest to community groups who are having difficulty in filling out funding applications and want to gain more information in this regard. At the session, guidelines for filling out funding applications will be presented and sample funding applications will be used to help give greater direction to groups.
